About Us

A sanctuary of wisdom, a global bond of spirit

Terakoya NINJA is a Japanese cultural experience facility on the grounds of the historic Koboji Temple in Mita, Tokyo. Our name carries two meanings: “Terakoya,” honoring the traditional temple schools that were the cradle of Japanese wisdom, and “NINJA” — the Nippon International Network for Japanese Alliance, our mission to connect the world through the essence of Japanese culture.

Founded in March 2020 by CEO Tae Iwasawa, we offer tea ceremony, ikebana, kimono and wagashi-making as a single, unified cultural experience — free from the boundaries of any one school or style.

Four Ways to Meet Japanese Culture

All experiences take place in our authentic 24-mat tatami room at Koboji Temple.

Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony

Wear a rare Oshima Tsumugi haori and enjoy freshly whisked matcha and seasonal wagashi with a kimono-clad tea master. About 75 minutes.

Held inside the historic Koboji Temple, this is our most popular experience: wear a rare Oshima Tsumugi haori — a world-renowned silk from Amami Oshima, prized for its mud-dyeing technique and intricate kasuri patterns — while a kimono-clad tea master prepares matcha and seasonal wagashi for you. Two formats are available: “Tea Ceremony & Japanese Sweets” (about 75 minutes) or “Kimono Dressing & Japanese Tea Ceremony,” where you take part while wearing a full kimono. Koboji Temple was founded in 816 by the monk Kobo Daishi Kukai and beautifully renovated in 2014. Group reservations of 21 or more are welcome — please contact us.

Ikebana

Ikebana

Learn traditional Japanese flower arranging with seasonal flowers and branches, guided by an experienced instructor. Beginners welcome.

Guided by a kimono-clad master, you'll learn the balance of form, space and line that defines Japanese floral art using seasonal flowers and branches. The “Luxury Ikebana Experience” takes about 90 minutes. Ikebana traces back to 6th-century Buddhist flower offerings and evolved into its own art form during the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Held in the same 24-mat tatami room at Koboji Temple. Group reservations of 21 or more are welcome — please contact us.
